Welding & Machining Technology

Program Description

The Welding & Machining Technology program offers students the opportunity to develop a comprehensive understanding of metal forming technology through precision metal machining and welding processes. The technical skills that are learned/used throughout the 2 year program include precision measuring, applied math, safety procedures, print reading, technical communication, employability skills and the importance of being a team player when working with others. These skills, along with the actual operation and use of the machines, are designed to help the student advance in their professional lives after graduation. Students will have the chance to become proficient in many different areas of welding including: SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, OXY-FUEL and various cutting processes.  Other essential industrial and manufacturing skills taught are fabrication, manual lathe, CNC machining, surface grinding, manual milling, troubleshooting and problem solving. There is an opportunity for students to gain employment at local businesses through the school’s co-op program.  In addition there are also opportunities to participate in SKILLSUSA, Delta Technical Solutions competition and an end of the year Ferris State Welding competition. These are a great way for students to meet other students from all over the state (or nation at Nationals) that are pursuing a similar career path as themselves. It is a great introduction to industry and shows the students that even under pressure, they can still perform the task at hand.  This program offers AWS industry welder certification testing to students that are prepared to take the test.  Our program is a wonderful introduction into industry and will prepare the students for either transferring to a trade school/college or for entry level positions in shops upon graduation.
