Medical Careers

HSP I

Program Description

First year students will focus on exploring and researching a wide variety of medical careers. They will explore all five pathways of the Health Science Cluster of Knowledge and Skills while paying close attention to Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services. Core curriculum includes Medical Terminology, Math related to drug administration, and Anatomy focusing on disease identification, symptoms and treatment.

The returning second year student will participate in an in-depth study of a specific medical field of the students choice while also completing the core curriculum of Microbiology with Diseases by Body Systems , Nutrition for Health and Healthcare, and Advanced  Medical Terminology.  An individualized education plan will be developed for each student and will consist of two components: related class work and an internship placement. Internships may be short or long- termed, and some are paid experiences for students who complete their required training. Employment opportunities may become available to students after completion of the program.

Opportunities for expanded leadership, management, technical, and citizenship development are available through membership in a co-curricular student organization, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). The organization includes local, regional, state, and international levels. Activities integrate curriculum competencies and objectives. Healthy competition through organized and judged skill events assist in strengthening those skills that make students more marketable as potential health care workers. HOSA seeks to instill an attitude of pride, commitment, and professionalism in its members, and strives to build self-esteem and confidence.
